I decided to look up something interesting and hopefully recent – on the research of LLLT of the brain. I’ll be right back…

……………………………….

OK, here we go…

……………………………………………..

They say a picture is worth a thousand words, and if you study the above pictures, you will see the obvious, even if you don’t know exactly what you are looking at.

The above picture comes from a webpage that has a very short and concise synopsis of both LLLT of the Brain, and the effects of low level laser therapy in general:

Has anyone else noticed the recent change in TV pharmaceutical commercials?

Has anyone out there realized that over the counter “cold and flu” drugs have been eliminated from children’s medication by law?

What do the two above statements have to do with one another?

When our children were growing up, I avoided such medications, and if it appeared that the cold or flu was going to keep the child awake, I would give them some children’s ibuprofen.

I felt that inflammation was the main irritant, and decreasing that would result in a more restful night’s sleep.

You know, it’s funny. You and I, (at least our bodies,) are “sponges” made of a highly organized electromagnetic network. Suspended in it are

little bits of mass.

And yet, the idea of electricity having anything to do with homeostasis is anathema to medical science. Why not?

For one thing, it is apparently difficult to prove.

Only recently has it become accepted that indeed “some” electricity runs along the nerves. Now an uneducated person reading this may think that the idea of electricity running along the nerves to be a commonly accepted idea.

No, far from it. It is avoided just as much as Ron Paul in the Republican primaries.

So what is my point?

Well, medical science has long has a negative view on “blaming” inflammation for just about anything except for the outwardly obvious conditions.

There appears to be much resistance to connecting chronic inflammation with cancer, for example.

Yet, to the “uneducated”, the idea of constant irritation and inflammation to particular tissues as being a possible cause of eventual cancer would appear to be a rational idea.

So, back to the recent commercials on TV. Something has happened.

Now, you don’t need just an allergy drug.

No. You need this new drug for “allergic inflammation”. It is billed as “getting to the cause” of your misery.

Getting to the cause.

Now, how about the cause of the cause?

One of many? Milk.

Another? Gluten. There are more.

Low Level Laser Therapy, Chiropractic, and Denial

Low level laser therapy.

What is it? Well, there are many books on the subject, and a remarkable amount of agreement exists among them.

Now, when we speak of dosages, there is often a wide array of treatment protocols and parameters. These are based on the cold laser’s wavelength, power, and also any modulation to the output. When we add the amount of knowledge that we don’t know yet, it is easy to see why we have such a wide range of recommended dosages.

The fact is that LLLT is not going to go away, as some will soon wish it would. It has been very jading to me – to see the denial in the realm of some research. I can’t imagine doing research on, say, rheumatoid arthritis, and having it come out negative, or inconclusive. I must say that I have come to the opinion that the negative studies had an agenda.

I am sorry to sound like a conservative zealot, but I just can’t think of any other reason for negative studies, unless the treatment parameters were something outrageously far from what I would recommend.

Chiropractic

The same goes for chiropractic, and I am sick of it. How can someone ignore the thousands of research papers which document the efficacy of chiropractic treatment? How is it, that just the other day, I visited a website where someone pronounced that there is not a single double-blind study that proves that chiropractic is effective.

What planet do these people come from? There are plenty of double-blind studies of chiropractic which demonstrate the value of this drugless health care approach.

I happen to be somewhat of a chiropractic heretic. I believe that there is only a small percentage of people who really, really need a chiropractor. I believe that percentage to be between ten and twenty percent of the population. Probably closer to ten percent.

Why do I believe this? Well, lets look at my words above: “really, really need a chiropractor”. What does that mean?

To me, it means that a person has a spinal problem that won’t go away. Not with time. Not with drugs. Not with exercise. Not with physical therapy. Not with surgery.

If this person has spine-related problems, and has been on the “medical merry-go-round”, for months or years, and nothing has been found that helped, at a cost of tens of thousands of insurance dollars, it is likely that this person really, really needs to try a chiropractor for a week or two, and see.

And if they need a chiropractor, nothing else will work.

Will the chiropractor “cure” them? Not likely. A chiropractor doesn’t “cure” anything. The body cures itself. If you are religious, you can say that it happens with God.

The only thing that a chiropractor does is to “undo”.

What does he/she undo?

He or she undoes the layers of millions of muscular memories fixated on a past injury or compensation, imbedded in the sensors and neuroreceptors found primarily in the tendons, and in the cerebellum. These are the many memories , recordings, whatever you would like to call it – that tell a particular muscle fiber just how long, short, tight, or loose to be. This information is in your standard medical physiology books, and has been there for generations.

The chiropractor allows the spine to relax again, when it has become tied up in knots because of compensations to old spinal injuries, and often compensations further up the spine, defending and re-balancing against the “over-compensation” below.

Remember when I mentioned a “small percentage”? I am talking about those who, on x-ray, demonstrate “wedging” of at least one vertebra. This is an unbalanced “block” in the stack of “blocks” that we call the spine. It became malformed because of injury or compensation when the person was a child of under eleven years of age.

How do I know that? There is something called “Wolfe’s Law”. It says that bone can be misshapen due to unequal forces over time, when a child is roughly eleven years of age or younger.

I find these wedged vertebrae on the majority of my patients and I believe that they make up at least ten percent of the population in general.

Also, the more wedged vertebrae I find, the more problems that patient usually has. The effects of spinal defensiveness against compensations to these resulting imbalances simply leads to more compensation as the person grows older. Sometimes simply growing bigger helps, but the imbalances remain.

The spinal joints get either stuck, or hyper-mobile as a compensation to the stuck vertebrae. Things wear out in certain areas and levels of the spine. When such dysfunctional spinal joints affect the delicate neural networks running through and near it, we can call that a classic chiropractic subluxation.

The effects can indirectly cause shoulder, elbow, or wrist problems, and sometimes cause overt organic or systemic problems as well.

These are the people who sing praises of their chiropractors.

These are the people who confound those who don’t want to hear.

These are the “ten percent” of the population that has always gone to chiropractors, if they were lucky enough to try.

The nice thing about LED therapy is that it can be used for much, much longer periods of treatment time [...]

LED works like low level laser therapy in some ways.

A new review of a research study has arrived which shows that LEDs can have a powerful effect on healing wounds. Although we are not talking about coherent light, the light does have positive effects. What does it take for plain old red or blue light to have this effect? The answer is that they are using monochromatic wavelengths. Say what? Well, it just means that the light is very pure, and sticks primarily to one defined color. For whatever reasons, this stimulates living tissues.

LLLT vs. LED

It may just be that those two Russian scientists, (I can’t remember their names right now,) had it right when they explained that the reason that tissues respond to coherent light so strongly is that those cells have never, in all of evolution, “seen” coherent light, so they react.

The same may be true regarding non-coherent, monochromatic light.

The nice thing about LED therapy is that it can be used for much, much longer periods of treatment time, and thus have differing effects in the long run. Diabetic people can use this method quite safely to treat their diabetic neuropathy.

Irradiation at 636 nm Positively Affects Diabetic Wounded and Hypoxic Cells in Vitro

Low level laser therapy has long been known for helping diabetics with a number of problems they may have. LLLT is proven, yet ignored, by the medical machine that robs seventeen percent of our GDP.

“Conclusions: Phototherapy resulted in hastened wound closure, increased proliferation, and normalization of cellular function. The decrease in the different pro-inflammatory cytokines and NF-κB translocation was model and time dependent. Overall, laser irradiation resulted in a reduction in inflammatory cytokines and directed cells into the cell survival pathway.”

Potential for Transcranial Laser or LED Therapy to Treat Stroke, Traumatic Brain Injury, and Neurodegenerative Disease

Margaret A. Naeser, Ph.D., L.Ac.,1,2 and Michael R. Hamblin, Ph.D.3,4,5

An Excerpt:

“In an early study with TLT, (transcranial light therapy,) to treat acute stroke in rats, significant beneficial results were obtained whether TLT was applied in a bilateral, ipsilesional or contralesional manner.12 TLT (808 nm) significantly improved recovery ( p < 0.01) at 3 weeks following ischemic stroke when treated once, at 24 h
post-stroke (contralesional; power density, 7.5mW/cm2 to brain tissue).9 The number of newly formed neuronal cells, assessed by double immunoreactivity to BrdU and tubulin isotype III, as well as migrating cells (doublecortin immunoreactivity), was significantly elevated in the ipsilesional SVZ. There was no significant difference in the stroke lesion area between control and laser-irradiated rats. The authors suggested that an underlying mechanism for the functional benefit post-TLT was possible induction of neurogenesis. Other
studies have also suggested that because improvement in neurologic outcome may not be evident for 2–4 weeks in the post-stroke rat model, delayed benefits may be caused, in part, by induction of neurogenesis and migration of neurons.13,14
A recent study with embolized rabbits showed a direct relationship between level of cortical fluence (energy density, J/cm2) delivered, and cortical ATP content.15 Five minutes following embolization (right carotid), rabbits were exposed

1VA Boston Healthcare System, West Roxbury, Massachusetts.
2Department of Neurology, Boston University School of Medicine, Boston, Massachusetts.
3Wellman Center for Photomedicine, Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, Massachusetts.
4Department of Dermatology, Harvard Medical School, Boston, Massachusetts.
5Harvard-MIT Division of Health Sciences and Technology, Cambridge, Massachusetts.
Photomedicine and Laser Surgery

to 2 min of NIR TLT using 808-nm laser on skin surface, posterior to bregma at midline. Three hours later, the cerebral cortex was excised. Use of continuous wave (CW) TLT (7.5mW/cm2, 0.9 J/cm2) resulted in a 41% increase in cortical ATP. Use of 100-Hz pulsed wave (PW) TLT (37.5mW/ cm2, 4.5 J/cm2) resulted in a 157% increase in cortical ATP.
Surprisingly, the increased cortical ATP level of 157% was higher than that measured in naive rabbits that had never suffered stroke. The authors suggested in future studies, greater improvement might be achieved by optimizing length of treatment, and mode of treatment (PW, perhaps at 100 Hz).
TLT has been shown to significantly improve outcome in human acute stroke patients, when applied at *18 h poststroke, over the entire surface of the head (20 points in 10/20 EEG system) regardless of stroke location.16–18

Significant improvements ( p < 0.04) were observed in the moderate and moderate–severe stroke patients only (n = 434), who received the real laser protocol (vs. sham), but not in severe stroke patients.17
To date, there are no TLT studies to treat chronic stroke patients. The use of laser light to stimulate acupuncture
points on the body (instead of needles) to treat paralysis in chronic stroke patients ( > 10 months post-stroke onset) has resulted in similar levels of improvement, following a series of 20 or 40 laser (or needle) treatments.19–21 A 20-mW, 780- nm, CW laser with 1-mm diameter aperture (Unilaser,
Denmark) was used (51–103 J/cm2 per point). Overall, 5/7 (71.4%) of the patients showed improvement, with an increase of 11–28% in isolated, active range of motion for shoulder abduction, knee flexion, and/or knee extension.
The two patients who showed no improvement had severe paralysis, with results similar to TLT results with severe, acute stroke patients.17 Therefore, stroke patients with paralysis improved when the paralysis was not severe, although a reduction in spasticity has been observed in severe cases (M.A.N., personal observation). Stroke patients with only mild or moderate hemiparesis (including only hand paresis) appear to have the best potential for improvement.
On brain CT scan, these mild–moderate cases have smaller areas of infarction adjacent to the body of the lateral ventricle, than those with severe paralysis in whom the lesion is often adjacent to the body of the lateral ventricle, closer to the SVZ, possibly impeding potential for neurogenesis. Depth of white matter lesion appears to be more important regarding potential for recovery than is the overall size of the cortical lesion.19–22 (See also: www.bu.edu/naeser/acupuncture)”

That’s a pretty catchy title, isn’t it? No, not the one right above – the one at the top – “Ultimate Secret Survivalist Tool”

The reason a standard 5 mw laser pointer is the ultimate survivalist tool is because:

Any self-respecting survivalist is going to have rechargeable batteries.

The AA size batteries in a laser pointer will last more than a year, maybe until the batteries get bad in a few years.

It can be used for all the conditions found in the laser book: Rejuvenation:..Using the Power of Light to Increase Vitality, Energy and Healing: 11 by 8.5 inch Edition, without drugs – things like teeth and gums problems, gall bladder problems, and many more unpredictable things.

I have have found for the past year that if I use a laser pointer on minor infections, (like an “angry” hangnail,) the infection is gone the next day.*

*Okay, let’s throw in a disclaimer: This is my statement based on my own experiences. It is not intended as medical advice. I am not telling you to do this, I am just saying that I do it. This is for information purposes only. Always seek medical advice for infections.

There, that should cover it.

A Potential Mechanism for Laser Therapy

Photomedicine and Laser Surgery
Volume 29, Number 6, 2011

Conclusions

In the present study, the antibody-based protein array
technology was applied for screening the cytokine expression
profile following MI, with or without laser irradiation.
The present study indicates that LLLI has a protective effect
on the injured myocardium by upregulating GM-CSF and
downregulating fractalkine during the acute phase after LLLI.
In a future study, we will apply the whole proteome analysis
to analyze the alteration of more cytokines involved in inflammation
at various points in time after laser irradiation.
The cytokine expression profile after laser irradiation offers a
potential novel mechanism

At the above link, you can read a nice synopsis which covers the research and warns that “having a large waist circumference has previously been associated with inflammation, insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, abnormal cholesterol levels and heart disease, according to background information in the article.”

Now, cancer has been added to the list. Basically, significant numbers of deaths from ALL causes are increased when you add the pot belly.

LLLT = Low Level Laser Therapy

Let’s review:

LLLT has been demonstrated to be both safe and effective in cases where biostimulation is deemed helpful. Biostimulation is the stimulation of biological elements and systems. I focus on chronic conditions, as opposed to acute conditions. I have very little experience with acute conditions, because my early personal experiences increased scar tissue deposition, and I only use LLLT for scratches and cuts, but not for anything worse. The same goes for strains and sprains; I do not use LLLT for new strains or sprains. This is because of the risk of too much scar tissue deposition. I know the research shows that it is helpful for such, but it should be done by a sports-related healthcare provider who has experience and training in the use of LLLT on acute conditions.

I don’t usually see those kinds of cases. Regarding the spine, I generally stay away from the spine with LLLT because of the relatively small risk of an aggravation of osteoarthritis. I know that the research says otherwise, but I find that OA generally becomes aggravated when illuminated with LLLT. I must say that I don’t have the best and latest equipment.

Soft tissues are much easier to illuminate with no negatives and reliable positives. Since I am a chiropractor, I am limited to using treatments such as the one below on only myself. It is interesting to me, because I have already treated myself in the past for the same problem.

This is a synopsis of a Russian research paper which demonstrated that LLLT and famitodine was a good combination for treatment of Primary chronic gastroduodenitis (PCG):
